Essay on Effects of Child Bullying - 1066 Words

Thursday February 24th 2011, my daughter Hailey came home from school distraught over a boy in her class who had shot himself the night before in his home. The doctors were not expecting this young man to make it through the night. I asked Hailey, â€Å"What would cause him to want to do such harm to himself?† Hailey replied to me â€Å"that he was just different Mom; no one liked him because he was different, and Nick was made fun of everyday, for his unusual sock choices and for being bi-sexual.† As she started to recall events that had taken place the day before in her band class she said to me â€Å"Mom, I wonder how my band teacher feels today after hearing this news. He really gave Nick a hard time for not knowing how to play a part on his†¦show more content†¦My son is a little overweight and due some other inappropriate comments that were made earlier in the week, he felt as if this was just another jab at him about being overweight. Avery was embarr assed by this teacher’s remarks, and the fact that the entire class was laughing at him. I was furious! I emailed the principal immediately and asked him to please look into this. The principal replied the next day, â€Å"that particular teacher was out for the day and he would speak to her upon her return†. I never heard another word from him how. Can we hold our children accountable for their actions when they bully another child, when obviously the teachers in our school district are not leading by example? I will never really know what those comments may have done to my son’s self-esteem, but I did let him know that even though he was scared to tell me what had happened in fear of it causing more problems for him, he did the right thing by telling me what had happened. After the suicides that have taken the lives of five precious children in our community, I want my children to know they can come to me about anything. There is never a circumstance that should ever want them to do harm to themselves.
